So I’m pretty sure the person Dean is talking to here is Cas. It can’t be Sam as even with his new short haircut that much of his ear and neck wouldn’t be visible from this angle, and I also spy a tiny bit of a tan collar there in the corner. And you know what this reminds me of? That scene in Road Trip where he’s talking with Cas and says “so what you’re saying is we’re both a couple of dumbasses?” and even with everything going on he’s still so soft and calm around him.
I’m gonna stick with my theory that Dean will not be cured all the way in 10x03, but Sam will administer human blood to him that will act as a temporary fix until they can figure out what to do about the MoC. I don’t know if Cas will be present for the curing, but it looks like he’s in the bunker at some point as I believe they’re standing in Dean’s room in this scene. IDK I’m just emotional about the way he talks to Cas and the way he is with Cas and the two of them standing in his room talking goodbye friends I am gone.
Can…can I just point out that this line is probably the most Real!Dean-ish line we see in the promo, that his affect and tone are not inline with Demon!Dean and more in line with Dean at the end of “Stairway to Heaven.”
Oh god they only stuck this in as a comedy reaction shot to something they were saying in the narrative over that video. How can this be the best thing out of the whole video if it is Cas? *squints at the blurry ear*
Talking about not being sure who’s in the shot I honestly had to go back and check if it even was demon!Dean when I watched it the first time - yeah, hair and shirt - because his tone caught me off guard and they went right into clips from older parts of the show after this and I was like “hang on I didn’t recognise that first one…” It was that unlike the awfulness we’ve seen from him in all the other clips of demon!Dean.
If it is Cas then there’s a couple of things I’m getting from this not just from the softer way he’s talking but *what* he’s saying: he uses “our lives”, as in, “you and me having a life together” and the overall point of the comment is that something totally weird to outsiders only makes sense because it’s the two of them; shared experience, knowledge, understanding. An equality between them. It’s an inclusive, friendly comment that draws them back together - TBH the comment alone is enough to make me think it probably is Cas since it can’t be Sam, because there’s no one else he would even have who can have that level of interlinked life familiarity.
The comment is not rude or attacking or anything else and seems to be coming in the middle of a friendly conversation. I’m saying that because once again if it is demon!Dean and Cas together, the surprising distance between them is a good thing - demon!Dean seems to be attacking everyone (literally snarling and snapping his teeth at Sam?!) and getting close to someone is about aggression and intimidation; by standing further away he’s making clear air and not actively working to threaten the person he’s talking to. He’s also looking down and away with humour on his face at one point, whereas all the Crowley stuff he’s looking down and condescending and disinterested, and in the little Sam bits we’ve seen it seems to be about being as threatening as he can. Each reaction is written loudly in his body language about how he sees them: Crowley as the insignificant, useless demon who can’t control him, Sam as a serious and dangerous threat that can, however, be utterly destroyed emotionally by the mere fact of what he is, hence the black flashing eyes and snarling. And then this with Cas?
I was rambling a while back about the last time Dean and Cas talked properly, over the table in 9x22, and how Dean was quite possibly putting on body language if he was as far gone as the last couple of episodes suggested. I don’t trust this abrupt change in mannerisms any more than I trust Dean’s last conversation with Cas to have been as gentle from him as it was on the surface. I made a prediction there that demon!Dean may be this way with Cas. I therefore maintain the point I made there: if Dean is manipulating Cas, he does it in a totally unique way to anyone else we see him attempt to control, because he knows Cas will not stand for it and he *respects* Cas to have authority in a way he won’t let Sam. The whole of 9x22’s opening and conclusion drove that point home.
Dean in this state offers Cas surprising levels of equality, comfort and care, because he knows, instinctively or deliberately, that Cas cares about him in a unique way and he can take advantage of that by showing care and respect in return.
Now that I’m seeing this I believe more than anything that 9x22 was a sneaky look into how Dean will be treating Cas, and my conclusion is: Dean is acting like this not so much because he is in love with Cas, but because he knows Cas is in love with him.
Whatever he feels is buried deep or temporarily lost, but the spark of it is left behind in this different set of rules for interacting with Cas, and that’s amazing.
